For Alfreda's Cinema's annual Juneteenth immersive, we present Larry Clark's Passing Through, a landmark of Black independent cinema and one of the most powerful films ever made about jazz.
Following musician Eddie Warmack's search for artistic freedom beyond commercial exploitation, the film links Black music, political struggle, and liberation across the African diaspora. Featuring music by Eric Dolphy, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sun Ra, and performances by Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, Passing Through remains a visionary meditation on culture, memory, and self-determination.
This special presentation includes a live performance by Irwin Hall, honoring jazz as a living tradition and a pathway toward collective freedom.
Doors at 6:30 pm. Music at 7:00 pm. Screening at 8:30 pm.
Special thanks to Larry Clark. Presented with the generous support of the Zankel Music Fund.
