A decade in the making, California-based artist Thomas Campbell's Yi-Wo is a stunning 16mm study of surfing that celebrates wave riding as a spiritual practice. Known for some of the most beloved contemporary surf films — The Seedling (1999), The Sprout (2004), The Present (2009) — Campbell's return to filmmaking after a sixteen-year hiatus features an array of innovative styles captured in reef breaks across the globe alongside a mind-altering soundtrack to offer, in his words, "a prayer, a habitual ritualistic gaze into the depths of the vast unknowable."
Featuring surfers Ryan Burch, Alex Knost, Craig Anderson, Karina Rozunko, Joel Tudor, Nick Melanson, Lauren Hill, Dave Rastovich, Ozzie Wright, Jared Mell, Trevor Gordon, Ry Craike and Bryce Young. With music by Cone Cinq, Spacemen 3, Group Inerane, Tommy Guerrero (with Josh Lippi and Matt Rodriguez), Arthur Russell, Kassia Meador and Alex Knost, Duane Pitre, Ray Barbee (with John Herndon and Josh Lippi), & Fuck Buttons.
New York premiere.
