8:00pm IN THE WHITE CITY by Alain Tanner. 1983, Portugal/Switzerland/UK, 109 min.

Swiss master Alain Tanner's underseen César-winning gem stars a beguiling Bruno Ganz as an dissatisfied sailor working on an ocean tanker who, on a whim, abandons ship to wander the streets of Lisbon with little more than a harmonica and a Super 8 camera. Suspended between two women — a young maid working at the hotel where he is staying and his disconcerted lover back at home — he explores the city in a state of wistful malaise. Luminously shot and entirely improvised without a script, In the White City is an ode to drifting dreamers and a revelatory roadmap across, as Tanner put it, “a distant city on the edge of a continent …. a place to escape to and from.”

North American premiere of new restoration. Thanks to Gérard Ruey & the Association Alain Tanner.
